Chapter 9

Magic Man

Nathan was still shaken when he arrived at Wand and Weaver from the events of the night before. He didn’t sleep well. The Dwayyo came for him, and if it wasn’t for that strange beast that fought it off, it would have had him. He had to go to work, but he was concerned about going home. He thought about moving his, Robin’s, and Rouges things into the loft while it wasn’t in use, but the fetehouse didn’t have any facilities to bathe or shower. That would be a problem.

He invoked every protection charm he knew before he left.

Robin spent the morning building fairy rings to draw pixies into the yard. They wouldn’t be able to protect them, but they would be a good early warning sign the beast was near. The pixies would seek shelter in the house at the first sign of trouble. What they did after that was a problem.

Rouge enchanted every wall, window, and door to make them impenetrable to any unwelcome visitor. This incantation was the source of the legend that a vampire couldn’t enter a home without first being invited. Of course, there was no such thing as a vampire, unless you counted the Ryukishi.

Nathan, Rouge, and Robin rushed from the car into Wand and Weaver.

Nathan’s hands shook. He focused his mind and rested in the comforting arms of his guardian for a moment. That should have returned peace to his mind, but the best his guardian could do was inspire his actions. She couldn’t manifest and fight off the beast if it attacked again.

Walking backstage, he smiled at Cyn, Harlow, Marley, and Lady Oban. Cyn was already in glamazon drag, and looked like she was ready for war.

Cyn smiled at Nathan, and looked hurt when the smile wasn’t returned. Why did that bother her so much? There was nothing going on between them as far as Nathan could tell. Cyn flirted with everyone. Nathan was no different from anyone else.

Nathan sat at his makeup mirror. Trembling, he tried to put his makeup on.

“Are you alright, sweetie?” Cyn asked.

Nathan closed his eyes. Pain covered his face like a mask. “The dwayyo tried to kill me last night.” He heard the room gasp. “It charged out of the woods and would have killed me if,” he tried to think of a way to describe that strange winged creature. “This bat winged thing fought it off. Rouge thinks it was a snallygaster. I am not sure there is such a thing. Whatever it was, it saved my life.”

The room was silent.

Opening his eyes, he glanced around at their astonished faces.

“You must have a guardian angel,” Cyn said.

Marley nodded, “Someone is looking out for you.”

“Could you make out the form of the creature?” Lady Oban asked.

“It was dark, and I was so,” Nathan almost said frightened, but that word was utterly inadequate for the job. “It had bat-like wings, talons on its wings and feet, a mouth full of razor sharp teeth, and,” he considered the moonlit creature for a moment.
